At the very basis of the Christian faith is grace, that is, the unmerited favor of God. We have all sinned against the Lord, which causes spiritual death and separates us from Him, yet He gives us a way back to Him. Ephesians 2 is clear in telling us that it is by grace that we have been saved through faith, not by our own doing, but a gift given by God.
In this, we see that God’s grace isn’t only His benevolence to give us forgiveness and salvation that we don’t deserve, but also God’s power to save us. In 2 Corinthians 12 when the Lord says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness…” He is demonstrating how He will overcome our sin and shield us. It is only by His power. God’s grace towards us is that despite being unworthy He loves us and is mighty to save us without any of our contribution.
This is amazing grace, more than enough to cover a lifetime of sin and still allow us to enter into His presence forever. Romans chapter 5 verses 20 and 21 tell us, “…where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Not only are we no longer receiving the punishment for sin, but we also are no longer bound to it. Sin has no hold over us since we are now under grace, and it is here that we are truly free to live for His glory. Grace means we are not under condemnation. We are liberated from the shackles of sin and the burden of works-based faith.
Confidently, we may now approach His throne of grace to receive a calling, purpose, identity, wisdom without reproach, spiritual gifts to fulfill His purposes, and all the heavenly blessings He desires to bestow upon us.
In 1 Peter chapter four verse 10, it reads, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.” Grace in our life works in many ways, and we must live accordingly, in obedience to our graceful, giving, God, who is deserving of so much more than we can offer Him. You cannot merit God’s favor, but you can live a life fully surrendered to Him. It is the Holy Spirit, our Helper, who empowers us to live in such a way, who is given to all who are saved by grace through faith.
When we live in His grace, we bring others to His grace. It is for all who would come to Him, and it is endless. And in it, we are loved and accepted, therefore we obey. We don’t need to strive to obtain His love and acceptance, His grace. It is ours, not to behold but to live and share with the lost who are held captive by sin, and with those who are encumbered by works-based faith. 2 Corinthians 9:8 tells us, “God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.”
Be a faithful steward of God’s grace; Live out God’s will, bring His name glory, and go unto all the nations to make His name and His grace known in all the world.
