From New Age to Jesus: A Testimony of Grace, Truth, and Transformation
Many people enter the New Age movement looking for healing, peace, purpose, or spiritual growth. For Mary O'Meara, that journey began with something that seemed harmless: hot yoga.
In Episode 50 of The Keystone Project Podcast, Mary shares her remarkable testimony of growing up in church, becoming deeply involved in New Age spirituality for more than a decade, and ultimately finding her way back to Jesus Christ.
Her story is one of spiritual searching, personal transformation, and the discovery that grace cannot be earned.
Growing Up Knowing Jesus, But Not His Truth
Mary was raised as a pastor's daughter in a Presbyterian family. Church was a regular part of her life, and she remembers loving Jesus from an early age.
Yet as she reflects on her upbringing, she describes a significant distinction:
"I grew up knowing Jesus, but I didn't grow up knowing his truth."
As she entered adulthood, church became less important. Like many young adults, she and her husband drifted away from faith and pursued their own path. While they still had a basic moral framework, they weren't actively following Christ or grounding their lives in Scripture.
That spiritual foundation would become important later as Mary began searching for meaning elsewhere.
How Yoga Led Into New Age Spirituality
When Mary was around 30 years old, she decided to try hot yoga as a way to improve her health and lose weight after having a child.
What started as a fitness decision became something much larger.
Over time, yoga introduced her to a broader world of New Age spirituality. Eventually she became a professional yoga instructor and immersed herself in practices such as:
- Reiki
- Energy healing
- Angel cards
- Spiritual guidance practices
- Manifestation teachings
- Online yoga instruction
For nearly 15 years, New Age spirituality shaped her worldview.
Mary explains that many people view yoga purely as physical exercise. However, from her experience inside the movement, she came to see deeper spiritual components that she had not recognized when she first began.
What initially seemed like a health practice gradually became a spiritual identity.
When Everything Started to Change
After years of teaching yoga and building an online presence, Mary began experiencing something unexpected.
Physically, her body no longer seemed able to continue.
She developed health issues, including an ulcer, and found herself unable to teach as she once had. But beyond the physical challenges, something deeper was happening spiritually.
One moment stands out vividly in her testimony:
"Yoga just left my body. I don't know how else to explain it."
At the same time, she began questioning many of the beliefs she had embraced.
The emphasis on personal truth, self-direction, and spiritual self-improvement no longer provided the peace she had been searching for.
The Loneliness of Worshipping the Universe
One of the most powerful moments in Mary's story came when she realized that the spiritual system she trusted was leaving her feeling empty.
In the New Age movement, she often focused on "the universe" as a source of guidance and meaning.
Yet during this season, she began feeling something she had never felt before.
The universe suddenly felt distant.
Large.
Impersonal.
Lonely.
What once felt spiritually fulfilling no longer brought comfort.
Instead, she sensed God drawing near.
Looking back, she recognizes that this dissatisfaction became part of God's invitation to return to Him.
A Powerful Encounter with Jesus
As Mary wrestled with questions about faith, truth, and spirituality, she experienced what she describes as a powerful encounter with Jesus.
While walking through her home, she suddenly sensed His presence in a way she had never experienced before.
The message was simple:
"Come back."
That moment marked a turning point.
Although she had known about Jesus throughout her life, she now began to see Him differently.
No longer simply a teacher.
No longer one spiritual figure among many.
But the Son of God calling her back to Himself.
Reading the Bible With New Eyes
As her spiritual perspective shifted, Mary began reading Scripture again.
One of the passages that deeply impacted her was Jesus' teaching about letting one's light shine.
For years, she had pursued concepts like "light," "energy," and spiritual awakening through New Age teachings.
Now she began seeing those ideas through a biblical lens.
Instead of seeking light from within herself, she discovered that true light comes from Christ.
This shift transformed the way she understood spirituality, healing, and purpose.
Why New Age Spirituality Never Fully Satisfied
One of the major themes discussed throughout the episode is the difference between New Age spirituality and biblical Christianity.
Mary describes how New Age practices often focus on continual self-improvement:
- More healing
- More spiritual work
- More manifestation
- More self-discovery
- More techniques
There was always another step.
Another workshop.
Another method.
Another level to reach.
Despite helping people feel better temporarily, she found that the deeper wounds often remained.
Eventually she came to recognize something she had never seen before.
The New Age movement functioned as a works-based system.
Grace Versus Self-Effort
One of Mary's most important realizations was the contrast between striving and grace.
In her words, New Age spirituality continually placed the burden on the individual.
You had to heal yourself.
You had to elevate yourself.
You had to transform yourself.
Christianity presented a completely different message.
Jesus had already done what she could never do for herself.
Instead of endless striving, she encountered grace.
Instead of self-salvation, she found a Savior.
This became one of the defining differences in her spiritual journey.
The Appeal of Control
Mary also discusses why New Age spirituality can be so attractive.
At its core, many teachings offer a sense of control.
Control over circumstances.
Control over healing.
Control over outcomes.
Control over destiny.
Yet she eventually realized that much of that control was an illusion.
The gospel invites people into something very different:
Surrender.
Trust.
Dependence on God.
While surrender can be difficult, she discovered it brought far more peace than carrying the burden of trying to control everything herself.
Christ Consciousness and Biblical Christianity
During the conversation, the hosts also discuss the popular New Age concept of "Christ Consciousness."
Mary explains that within many New Age circles, Jesus is viewed as an enlightened teacher whose level of consciousness can eventually be achieved by anyone.
In contrast, biblical Christianity teaches that Jesus is uniquely God incarnate.
Rather than humanity ascending to become like Christ in essence, the gospel centers on Christ descending to save humanity through His life, death, and resurrection.
This distinction became one of the key reasons Mary ultimately rejected New Age beliefs and embraced biblical Christianity.
We Were Created to Worship
Another major takeaway from the episode is the idea that every person worships something.
Whether it is:
- Self
- Success
- Money
- Power
- Spirituality
- Government
- Relationships
Human beings are designed to worship.
As Mary explains:
"No matter what, you're creating a god of something."
The question is not whether we worship.
The question is who or what we worship.
For Mary, discovering Jesus meant redirecting her worship away from created things and toward the Creator.
A Message of Hope
Throughout the conversation, Mary repeatedly emphasizes compassion for people currently involved in New Age spirituality.
She understands why people are drawn to it because she lived it.
She knows many are sincerely searching for healing, peace, purpose, and truth.
Her testimony is not one of condemnation.
It is a testimony of invitation.
An invitation to discover the grace, truth, and peace she found in Jesus Christ.
